There are two kinds of Olympic Games, Winter Olympic Games, and Summer Olympic Games. Summer Olympic Games were organized for the first time in 1896 and they are a multi-sport competition. The recent Summer Olympic Games were held in Rio, Brazil, in 2016. Summer Olympic Games were held in eighteen countries. It is necessary to underline the fact that Great Britain wins at least one gold medal every Summer Olympic Games and the USA occupies the leading position and is usually the leader in the number of medals. Summer Olympic Sports consist of five categories from A to E. They are:  A (athletics, gymnastics, aquatics), B (cycling, football, basketball, volleyball, and tennis), C (badminton, archery, judo, boxing, shooting, rowing, table tennis, and weightlifting), D (canoe, fencing, equestrian, field hockey, handball, triathlon, taekwondo, sailing, wrestling), E (golf, rugby, and modern pentathlon). The E category was added to the Summer Olympic Sports only in 2016.

The USA has 2,520 medals overall, won from 1896 to 2016.

Russia is in the second place and it owns 1,865 medals.

Germany owns 1,681 medals and 42 of them were won in 2016.

Great Britain owns 847 medals, 67 of them were won in 2016.

France can boast 713 medals.

Italy is the owner of 577 medals, 28 of them were won in 2016, and 8 of them were gold.

China has 543 medals.

Australia has 497 medals and 29 of them were won in 2016.

Sweden is the owner of 494 medals, 11 of them were won in 2016, and only two of them were gold.

Hungary has 491 medals won in the Summer Olympic Games from 1896 to 2016.
